Our destination in this course? One of the closest echoes we have for our current moment: THE ENLIGHTENMENT.
This was an era of profound spiritual, technological, political and cultural transformation, much like our own. And it was all based around a simple, but radical call to action:
Sapere Aude.
Dare to know.
Or, more fully: “Have courage to use your own reason.”
This phrase was reawakened in 1784 by German philosopher Immanuel Kant, whose essay “What Is Enlightenment?” issued a clear and urgent challenge:
To think for yourself.
To trust your own reason.
To break free from mental dependency.
Kant (Pluto in Virgo) —no stranger to mystical undercurrents—stood at the tail end of the Enlightenment and lit its final lantern.
But the words weren’t his originally.
They came from the Roman poet Horace, and before Kant, they were revived during the previous Pluto in Capricorn cycle by Philip Melanchthon, the Reformation-era reformer, educator, and accidental revolutionary of his own time.
